PotPal's default range for clivia
- Summer: every 2–3 days
- Spring and autumn: every 5 days
- Winter: every 7 days
These ranges are PotPal's default starting point for this species by season; once the plant is in the app, PotPal adjusts them for light, pot, soil mix and local weather. They are PotPal's convention, not a general gardening rule, and checking the soil always comes first.
Light
Partial shade or bright, indirect light both work.
The most common way it gets killed
Pouring water into the leaf center, or watering too much; its roots store water, so less is better.
How to check
Push a finger two knuckles into the soil; when dry, water and keep it out of the leaf center.
The general rule of checking the soil rather than the calendar comes from UConn Home and Garden Education Center, Houseplant Watering Recommendations (homegarden.cahnr.uconn.edu), checked 2026-10-13.
Let PotPal keep track
PotPal works out a watering window for each plant you add and sends a local reminder, and you can tap Not dry yet when the soil is still damp. Adopting clivia straight from the in-app plant atlas is coming with PotPal 1.4.0, with the range above as its starting point.
