Which plant care app should you use?

Short answer: Pick by what you need: Planta for an all-in-one care suite with a light meter and shared care, PictureThis if identifying and diagnosing plants is the point, Greg for a custom watering plan with a community, Plant Parent for care guides with reminders, and PotPal if you only want to know when a plant may need water and keep your soil check as the final word. No app can diagnose a plant with certainty.

Searches for a plant care app return a lot of lists. This page compares the five apps that came up most on the first Google results page, using only what each says about itself.

We make PotPal, so it is listed with the same fields as everyone else and we say plainly where the others are stronger. Facts come from each app's App Store listing (US) and vendor site, checked 2026-10-16. Prices and features change; "not verified" means we did not see a clear statement, which does not mean the feature is absent. How we chose the apps: they appeared on the first Google results page for at least two of our searches or in a top-three position, such as plant care app, planta alternative, picturethis alternative and best plant care app iphone (raw data in the research note).

PictureThis

PictureThis is built around identification, with disease diagnosis, a toxic plant warning, weed identification, a water tracker and a light meter. Choose it if identification is the point. Full comparison: PictureThis alternative. Source: App Store listing, checked 2026-10-16.

Greg

Greg describes a zero-guesswork care app: a custom watering plan from species, size and your home, reminders, a free scan and a community social feed. Its listing shows an annual plan at $29.99. Choose it if you like the community. Source: App Store listing, checked 2026-10-16.

Plant Parent

PotPal

PotPal is the narrowest. It combines the plant's profile with season, light, pot, location and your last observation to suggest a care window, and it tells you to feel the soil first. It offers observations and suggestions, not disease diagnosis. It needs no account. Source: App Store listing, version 1.4.1, checked 2026-10-16.

How to choose

No app can diagnose a plant with certainty from a photo. Feel the soil, and for a serious problem ask a local nursery or extension service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best plant care app?

There is no single best one. Planta is the broadest, PictureThis the strongest on identification, Greg adds a community, and PotPal is the narrowest, built around when to water.

Which plant care apps are free?

All five can be downloaded free. Planta, PictureThis, Greg and Plant Parent have paid tiers; PotPal is free to start with an optional Pro. Check each listing for current prices.

Can an app tell me exactly when to water?

No. Any schedule is an estimate. The soil, the pot and the light decide, which is why PotPal asks you to feel the soil before you water.

PotPal works out when your plants may need water, and you keep the final say by checking the soil.
