PotPal's default range for cactus
- Summer: every 7–10 days
- Spring and autumn: every 20 days
- Winter: every 30–60 days
These ranges are PotPal's default starting point for this species by season; once the plant is in the app, PotPal adjusts them for light, pot, soil mix and local weather. They are PotPal's convention, not a general gardening rule, and checking the soil always comes first.
Light
Needs strong light; direct sun is best.
The most common way it gets killed
Watering on a summer schedule in winter; it needs almost no water then.
How to check
Push a finger two knuckles into the gritty mix; water only when it's completely dry, and barely at all in winter.
The general rule of checking the soil rather than the calendar comes from UConn Home and Garden Education Center, Houseplant Watering Recommendations (homegarden.cahnr.uconn.edu), checked 2026-10-13.
Let PotPal keep track
PotPal works out a watering window for each plant you add and sends a local reminder, and you can tap Not dry yet when the soil is still damp. Adopting cactus straight from the in-app plant atlas is coming with PotPal 1.4.0, with the range above as its starting point.
