How often to water an aloe vera

What PotPal assumes for an aloe vera, the light it likes, the mistake that kills it most often, and how to check before you water.

PotPal's default range for aloe vera

These ranges are PotPal's default starting point for this species by season; once the plant is in the app, PotPal adjusts them for light, pot, soil mix and local weather. They are PotPal's convention, not a general gardening rule, and checking the soil always comes first.

Light

Loves strong light; keep it somewhere bright.

The most common way it gets killed

Watering as soon as the surface dries; it only needs water once the top third of the soil is dry.

How to check

Probe a third of the way down the pot with your finger; water only when that whole layer is dry.

The general rule of checking the soil rather than the calendar comes from UConn Home and Garden Education Center, Houseplant Watering Recommendations (homegarden.cahnr.uconn.edu), checked 2026-10-13.

Let PotPal keep track

PotPal works out a watering window for each plant you add and sends a local reminder, and you can tap Not dry yet when the soil is still damp. Adopting aloe vera straight from the in-app plant atlas is coming with PotPal 1.4.0, with the range above as its starting point.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water aloe vera in summer and in winter?

PotPal's default is every 14–21 days in summer and every 30–45 days in winter, and every 22 days in spring and autumn. That is PotPal's own starting range, not a general rule.

The reminder came but the soil is not dry yet. What should I do?

Wait and check again. Tap Not dry yet in PotPal to push the reminder back by 2, 4 or 7 days. It does not count as a watering.

PotPal works out when your plants may need water, and you keep the final say by checking the soil.
